"Chairman Howard Dean said that the Democratic Party is renewing its campaign vigor in Louisiana, and specifically reaching out to African Americans, whom he called "the bedrock of the Democratic party in the South." Dean spoke during an exclusive roundtable discussion with African-American publishers and news reporters at the Sheraton New Orleans last Thursday.
Dean was in town for an "Essence of the Democratic Party" fundraiser at TwiRopa, as part of his promise to bring Democrats back to the grassroots. At the roundtable, which lasted 45 minutes, Dean launched into a recitation of new connections the Democratic Party has forged with African Americans.
Addressing concerns that the party has recently taken the African-American vote for granted, Dean said that leaders are mobilizing in Louisiana now for the 2008 elections. The party plans to fund four organizers who have lived in the area for at least four years, and will "look like people in the communities they represent." Beefing up organizational capacity is the goal in all 50 states, Dean said.
"We know we need to modernize state parties."
Dean said it was a mistake to assume that people of color were concerned only with civil rights."-from the article in the Louisiana Weekly.
