"LITTLE ROCK - Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean warned Friday that Republicans may use anti-immigration sentiment to gain votes in the 2006 election.
Dean blamed Republicans for using blacks and gays as "scapegoats" in election years past and said Hispanics were next on the list during a speech at the national convention of the League of United Latin American Citizens. Dean said he believed Republicans divided Americans on affirmative action in 2002 and gay marriage in 2004 to pick up election victories. He said he's sees a similar pattern developing for 2006 on immigration.
The former presidential candidate and Vermont governor advocated sweeping immigration reform, as did Mehlman. Dean said illegal immigrants who have paid into the American tax system for many years should be legalized and be able to draw Social Security benefits. The federal government should be responsible for providing government services to children of illegal immigrants, he said, since the federal government had the responsibility for securing borders in the first place."-from the story today via the Arkansas News Bureau.
