In a time when words are being used to twist truths and confound what is real, a new age of documentary film is emerging that has taken up the job left mostly undone by modern news organizations. This series is an effort to bring some of these films to light so we can see and discuss issues that have mostly been buried by disinformation and omission. The pictures we are showing here are not pretty, but that does not mean we should look away. To move forward we need the reinforcement of positive ‘for’ words- hopefully these films will help us to move ahead, but to do that we also need to act- come and see why and let’s talk about how.
Saturday February 10- American Blackout- a film by Ian Inaba
In a time of supposed racial tolerance and social awareness, one might question the need for a film about black voter disenfranchisement in the 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections in the United States of America . This film has us question how far we’ve actually come on the road to racial equality, and asks many others. We will open with a 25 minute film by Haydyn Reiss about linguist George Lakoff’s analysis of the framing of political ideas and how these messages have shaped current events.
All films will be shown at Havurat Ee Shalom, 15401 Westside Hwy at 7:30, Vashon Island, Washington. Admission will be by donation- $5.00 suggested. These are not for profit screenings and all money collected will go toward screening expenses, a donation to the director, and a small percentage will be retained for future film purchases. I started posting on HowieinSeattle in 11/04, following progressive American politics in the spirit of Howard Dean's effort to "Take Our Country Back." I decided to follow my heart and posted on seattleforbarackobama from 2/07 to 11/08.--"Howie Martin is the Abe Linkin' of progressive Seattle."--Michael Hood.
