Five years on, I still respond to events spawned by the 9/11 attacks with a heightened awareness borne of my time at Ground Zero. I believe strongly that we have started along that second path of more violence and less safety. Our nation's leaders have used our natural fear from that day to upend our moral compasses and to convince us that our safety lies in an unending "war on terror." Under cover of that war, they are whittling away at the constitutional rights upon which this nation was built.
Is this the path we want to pursue? It's not too late to change direction, to write the alternative story, the one about remembering that we are all interconnected peoples on this planet, that we have far more in common than we have that divides us, and that we don't have to live our lives in constant fear and shock.
I started posting on HowieinSeattle in 11/04, following progressive American politics in the spirit of Howard Dean's effort to "Take Our Country Back." I decided to follow my heart and posted on seattleforbarackobama from 2/07 to 11/08.--"Howie Martin is the Abe Linkin' of progressive Seattle."--Michael Hood.
