BREAKING NEWS (UPDATE II with video)

UPDATE II: I just listened to a report on ABC News and the Edwards said they will continue campaigning, even though Mrs. Edwards' cancer has returned. Video from NBC (6:18). CNN has this story:
Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards said Thursday his wife's cancer had returned but his bid for the White House will go on.

John Edwards said tests this week had shown his wife, Elizabeth, had cancer in a rib on her right side. He said the cancer is treatable but not curable.

Elizabeth Edwards said she was "incredibly optimistic" and said her expectations about the future were unchanged.

She said she felt fortunate that she felt pain from a cracked rib and got X-rays for that which revealed the cancer.

UPDATE--MSNBC:
Democrat John Edwards is suspending his campaign for the presidency, and may drop out completely, because his wife has suffered a recurrence of the cancer that sickened her in 2004, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, sources said Thursday.

A prominent Iowa Democrat told Norah O’Donnell of NBC News that Edwards’ campaign has begun calling supporters in Iowa and telling them that he will suspend his presidential bid and started canceling upcoming events in Iowa.

Meantime, a friend of Edwards told The Politico Web site: "At a minimum he's going to suspend."

The friend, who was not identified, added, "Nobody knows precisely how serious her recurrence is. It'll be another couple of days before there's complete clarity."

"For him right now he has one priority which is her health and the security of the two young children," the friend said.

As for the campaign, the friend said, "You don't shut this machine off completely, but everything will go on hold."

On May 21, 2006, John Edwards said the only thing that would stop him from running for president is if Elizabeth's health problems come back.

He has scheduled a news conference for midday ET.
MSNBC:
Sources: Edwards to suspend presidential run due to wife's ill-health.
