''Get A Spine'' (UPDATED)

"Howard Dean and Arianna Huffington delivered hellfire and brimstone to the Democratic faithful here this morning: Dean talked about how Democrats win Republican and independent votes when they speak from conviction, and that we need to have clear, principled positions. He lambasted the Republicans for the “dark, difficult and dishonest vision” of America, and attacked them for allowing the corporations to pillage pension funds. Dean has to be nice; he’s the head of the DNC now. Arianna is a free agent, which has its pluses. Apparently the whole deal was on C-SPAN. Try to catch it; it was great and it’ll probably be on this weekend."-from the post on Suburban Guerilla, blogging at some meeting in Washington, DC today. Update: John Nichols, writing in The Nation, via Yahoo! posts from this conference (Campaign for America's Future's "Take Back America"): "They came to hear Howard Dean. But they got the message that matters from Arianna Huffington. That's because, while the chairman of the Democratic National Committee delivered a tepid and predictable address to the Campaign for America's Future's "Take Back America" conference on Thursday, the columnist and author who not that many years ago identified as a Newt Gingrich conservative was the speaker who showed up with a roadmap for renewal of the Democratic party. Where Dean made no direct mention of the war in Iraq during a lengthy address to the morning plenary that kicked off the fullest day of the annual gathering of progressive activists, Huffington went to the heart of the matter.
"We cannot continue to ignore the debacle in Iraq if we are going to have any hope of (Democrats) ever again being a majority party," said Huffington, the conservative who came in from the cold and has recently leant her name and her energy to the www.huffingtonpost.com blogspot." Read the whole post, there's more good stuff.
